Fircrest Cemetery
Fircrest Cemetery is located in the city of Oak Harbor, on Whidbey
Island, Island County, Washington. It is behind the
house at 775 Oak Harbor Avenue, about half a block north of the
intersection of Oak Harbor Avenue and NE 7th Ave. It is set back
from the street, on the west side. There is a sign by the street
that is obscured from view from the south by a tree. This cemetery
is owned by the Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church, and most of the
burials here have surnames of Dutch origin.
The cemetery was platted in two sections. The old section has rows
numbered (west to east) from 1 to 13, with each row divided into
sections lettered (south to north) from A to D. Originally each
section contained six graves, with a space between sections equal to the
size of a grave, but some of the spaces have been used for burials, and we
have considered such graves to be the seventh in the preceding
section. The newer section is immediately north of the old one and
has rows lettered (west to east) from A to L with grave sites numbered
(south to north) from 1 through 16.
We are indebted to a previous survey of this cemetery which we had at our
disposal, done by Bob and Donna Sand in 1984-1986, published in the
Bulletin of the Whatcom Genealogical Society and available on the
internet. We have used this list as a guide, verified names and
dates, made corrections as necessary, and added more recent burials.
We are also indebted to Gerard Eelkema and the Oak Harbor Christian
Reformed Church for making available a map of the cemetery with additional
burial information not found on the gravestones.
